Difference between Honours and AP

An honors class typically covers the same curriculum as the regular version of that course. AP classes, however, are more challenging than honors classes. These courses cover information, teach skills and give assignments that correspond to college classes. High school students taking AP courses will be held to the same standard as college students. These classes help students to get a preview of college life. There are a catch though – you must take an AP exam and score at least a 3 out of 5. The level of rigor for both AP and honors courses varies by school and by state. At many schools, AP courses are much more difficult than honors courses, while at other schools the exact opposite is true

Honours degree has various meanings in the context of different degrees and education systems. Most commonly it refers to a variant of the undergraduate bachelor’s degree containing a larger volume of material or a higher standard of study, or both. Being awarded honours considerably enhances your undergraduate qualification and transferable skill set. You will fine-tune your research, critical thinking and communication abilities and demonstrate to employers that you can challenge yourself and go the extra mile. A Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree is considered to be superior to the Bachelor of Science degree.

In addition to saving time and money on their way to a college degree, your child can benefit in the following ways just by taking an AP course:

  • They’ll dig deeper into subjects that interest them.
  • They’ll stand out in the college admission process.
  • They’ll build the confidence and skills they need to tackle challenging college coursework.
  • They’ll increase their chances of completing a college degree in 4 years or less.
  • Taking AP may also help your child earn scholarships to help pay for college.

Honours will benefit a student in the following way

  • Honours involves undertaking an additional year of study (or equivalent part-time) at the end of your bachelor’s degree, and incorporates a combination of coursework and a dissertation, although this may vary from school to school.
  • Your honours study will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills as an independent researcher under the supervision of a member of staff with expertise in your chosen area.
  • Successfully completing an honours degree will not only prepare you for higher-degree study at master’s and PhD level, but will demonstrate to prospective employers a higher capacity for independent learning and research, along with enhanced problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills.
